December 30th, from start to finish

I'm finally having some time to sit down and blog about Miles birth.  The past few days have been wonderful.  We've spent some time having to adjust to a newborn being around, but things are going smoothly, other then the fact that Miles is apparently on USA time and sleeps all day and likes to be awake during the night.  Gavin loves having his baby brother around: he's very affectionate, loving, and always wants to make sure that Miles is okay.  He calls him 'bebe'.  Captain and Kimmie have been a tremendous help and we're loving having them here.

Now onto the details of the day.

We went to bed at midnight after playing a long game of Mexican Train Dominoes (The Sperlings' spent the evening with us) and then we packed our bags and got things all together.  We woke up at 2am, our driver, Saju, who was assigned to me for the past two months arrived, and we left our house by 3am.

During the hour and fifteen minute drive to the hospital, Brooks and mom took a nap.  I tried, but was woken up 3 times with contractions, about 20 minutes apart.  Hmmm.  Before arriving at the hospital, Brooks got up and ate some food he packed himself, to help ensure that he would not have a passing out episode like he did when Gavin was born and it worked!  He was "solid like a rock".

We checked in and were admitted to the hospital and I was up in my room by 5am.

Upon entering my room, I was given my first enema. This was required and I did not know it!  Enough said.

6am- doctor on call came in and checked me.  I was 4cm and Miles placement was +1.  I was given my IV and of course, that's when the fun began.  I got sick, mom found me a puke bucket that came in handy, and I had episode #1 of passing out.  10 minutes later and a new robe, we're good to go!

6:20am- having a few back contractions.  We're informed the anesthesiologists are on their way and they will administer an epidural first before starting the pitocin.  Over here, they feel it's better to get an epidural before labor starts- so your body is more relaxed and you're less likely to move when it gets placed.  I just thought, "okay, sure, that's fine".

6:45am- Epidural is done.  Two Egyptian anesthesiologists performed the epidural, and things went smoothly.  Until-- I started feeling extreme pain in my right arm, started getting sick-- mom found another puke bucket for me, and I passed out for the 2nd time in an hour.  Doctor said my body went into hypertension or something like that, which is normal once the medicine goes through your body.   They performed a 'cold test' where they placed a cold rag on different areas of my body to determine if the epidural had gone into effect, which it had, and off they went!

7am- my new nurse, Adele came in and we instantly LOVED her!!

7:20am- doctor comes in to check me.  I'm 6cm, 80% effaced, and Miles placement was -2.  She breaks my water to see if that will speed up my labor even more, on it's own, before the pitocin is administered. Yea, at this point, I hadn't even been "induced" yet.

7:40am- we made phone calls letting Captain know what was going on and to plan on coming to the hospital sooner, rather then later.  I put make up on, Brooks and mom hung out, and they turned the pitocin drip on.

7:55am- contractions are already starting to speed up, just waiting for them to get 2 minutes apart.  We all took a nap and relaxed before things got going.

8:55am- our doctor's assistant, Dr. Evelyn, came in and checked me.  I'm 9cm, fully effaced, and Miles placement is -1.

9:08am- I tell the nurse pressure is building.  Evelyn came back in and checked me again, I'm 10cm, and it's time!

9:15am- I start pushing.  We're all laughing at how fast this morning just went and none of us can believe that I progressed as fast as I did, went through the entire induction process "backwards", and are about to meet Miles.

9:27am- Miles arrives in the world!

I actually helped bring him into the world- literally!  When it was time, my doctor asked for my hands.  I wasn't real sure why he told me to give him my hands, but I did it anyways.  As Miles was being delivered, my doctor placed my hands around Miles and I pulled him out (sorry if that's too much info).  NEVER in a million years would I have thought to do this, asked to do it, or wanted to do it, however, it was a VERY neat experience and a sweet moment when I placed him on my chest.  My mom took a picture of the clock on the wall the moment Miles arrived.

Miles was healthy and everything looked good!  He has one proud daddy!

I was beside myself the moment Miles arrived.  Of course, they whisked him away to check everything and I had to wait 30 minutes or so to hold him again.  I just couldn't believe he was here!

You know that part in the movie Home Alone when Kevin thinks he made his family disappear and he's stunned, in shock, and then realizes he's now all alone and the fun begins?  I kinda had a similar moment when they placed Miles into my arms and I realized, "Oh my gosh, I just had a baby..... in Saudi Arabia".  I couldn't believe that we did this!  I couldn't believe that every unknown, every fear, every concern about having a baby outside of the USA- actually worked out.  It worked out beautifully and here was our little man to prove it!!

We took this exact same picture when Brooks brought me Gavin for the first time.  I loved getting this moment captured!

Look at all that hair!!  We were stunned when the doctor told us he had a head full of hair while I was pushing.  Never did we expect that-- Brooks and I were both bald forever, so was Gavin.

Kimmie got to share in the experience and was so excited to meet her 6th grandbaby to give her a 'happy heart!'

Less then an hour old.  So cute-- and definitely looks like the Williams side of the family.

1:00pm- My dad, Gavin, and the Sperlings came to the hospital once I had been transferred to our new room and we were beside ourselves waiting for Gavin to get to meet Miles.  Gavin loved seeing his mommy and daddy and loved even more meeting baby Miles.  He loved him instantly.

Miles already surrounded by people who love him!!

6pm- Around dinner time, my parents, the Sperlings, and Gavin left to go get some dinner and we were ready to whine down for the evening- it had been a long day and we were exhausted, running on very little sleep.  However, our evening was very eventful and we didn't get to sleep until 2am.

7pm- I was allowed to get up and walk to the bathroom.  All I can say is episode #3 of passing out occurred in the bathroom, which sent me straight back to the bed for another 2 hours.  Ugh!

10:30pm- I had a small complication that required me to receive an injection of pitocin to put my body back into labor so that my uterus would contract and release all that it needed to.  Needless to say, I spent the next 2 hours in 'labor'.  I experienced more pain during those 2 hours then I did the whole morning I was in actual labor and delivery.  Meanwhile, it was time to feed Miles in the middle of this ordeal, but he got sick- started throwing up, gagging, and chocking.  We were concerned and called his nurse to our room.  She immediately sent him to be seen by the doctor to check for blood in his stomach (based on what his throw up looked like).  A few hours later, I quit having contractions every minute apart and Miles was brought back to our room with a good report!

Overall, it was a good day!

We spent the next two days, including New Years Eve in the hospital and my parents and Gavin came to visit us on Friday.  Gavin couldn't wait to hold his baby brother again.  It was so fun to watch him interact with Miles and was very excited to see he was with Mommy and Daddy.  Brooks and I had a great experience in the hospital, we were very well taken care of, and couldn't be more pleased with the way things worked out.  I'll blog later about a few of the differences between the medical care from the states vs. here.

My two boys!  Priceless!

35 weeks

I made it to 35 weeks on Thursday and was very excited and relieved that Miles had not arrived yet.  Since he's been teasing us for a few weeks, I decided to start taking a picture every week of my growing belly incase that may be the last week we see it.  I'm definitely continuing to grow every day and things are starting to get a little more difficult in the moving around department.  I'm averaging waking up 3 times a night to go pee and I've noticed that Miles has gotten lower in the past week or two.  Just check out my 32 weeks belly post and compare the two.  At the same time, I've noticed I can't eat near as much food as I use to and I've started experiencing heartburn, indigestion, and nausea.  Something I did NOT have with Gavin at this point in the pregnancy, not to mention I wasn't sick a single day with Miles during my first trimester so it's interesting to see this change.  It's fine though-- not that big of a deal.  One other change I've noticed that I'm bracing myself for is..... I put a pair of my flip flops on the other day and noticed they felt a little snug.  If you were around me when I was 9 months pregnant with Gavin and just got off of bed rest, then you know that my feet turned into marshmallow shaped balloons and were so massive you couldn't even see that I had individual toes.  HAHAHA-- the joys of being pregnant!

Below are some fun pictures of Gavin hanging out while we worked on a few things to prepare for Miles' arrival.  Gavin got to enjoy a special cookie from the baby shower.

He also got to play with all the diapers and wipes we received.  Brooks would stack them on the bed and Gavin would crash through them.  It entertained him for like an hour.

Baby Shower for Miles

Last week, several sweet friends threw me a baby shower for Miles.  I was beyond surprised when they told me they wanted to do this.  I was never expecting to have a shower thrown for us, much less to be blessed by women who have only known us for a few short months.  The whole entire shower, I was filled with overwhelming gratitude for the graciousness that was being shown!!  (sorry for using so many big/serious adjectives)

The hostesses did a great job with decorations, a precious diaper cake, and some yummy food.  There was also a DELICIOUS cake and some personalized sugar cookies that nearly brought me to tears.  You'll see pics of all these things below and I'm sure you'll feel the same way as I did-- they are all sooo CUTE!!!!!  Did I mention they even decorated a Christmas tree with all baby boy ornaments and decorations?  Now, that was clever.

me and the Hostesses!

I was asked what we needed or wanted for baby Miles, and since we brought EVERYTHING of Gavin's that we owned, there wasn't many suggestions.  However, we did ask for disposable items such as diapers, wipes, and bath stuff.  I think it's safe to say that we won't be purchasing diapers for a LONG TIME.  When I saw the stack of diapers that we received, I couldn't help but laugh, thinking to myself what a nice treat it will be to not go searching for specific diaper sizes.  There were also plenty of gifts for Miles that will come in handy!  He got some cute, cute, cute onesies, pajama outfits, camel rattles, (what else did you expect?), and he even received his first LSU item- a tooth pillow with Mike the Tiger for when he gets older.

Okay, so there is a really funny story that goes along with this picture...  I'm laughing hysterically because a lady was at my shower, who is from Singapore.  She had never been to a baby "shower" before in her life.  When she received her invitation she asked a few ladies (who are jokesters themselves) what you do at a baby "shower".  They proceeded to tell her that they were all going to "bathe" me.  She was really confused.  They also told her it was required to wear a white t-shirt to the shower.  She was semi- confused, but thought maybe this was a REALLY weird American tradition at baby showers.  Needless to say, they had her going for a while, until she realized it was a joke.  But, she shared her story with us while I was opening her gift- and we all went NUTS listening to her!  We're glad she came-- without a white t-shirt on-- and we're thankful we were able to show her what a real baby shower is like.

....And with this picture, you see I'm holding a hat.  It came with a matching pajama outfit in THE.CUTEST.CONTAINER.EVER shaped like a pint of ice cream.  It was called a Pint of Pajamas!  The hat is made to look like ice cream with sprinkles and a cherry on top.  SOOOOO CUTE!!!

There's another picture of me holding a green gun.  One of the ladies thought it would be sweet for Gavin to get a present in the midst of all of Miles' gifts. HE LOVED IT and was very appreciative that he got to open a gift amongst all the bags that came home with us.

There was one "big" baby item that did not make it to Saudi with us and that was our bouncer.  I was shopping with the hostesses a few weeks ago and saw this bouncer and commented on how we needed one.  It was the last present I opened at Miles baby shower.  Now, all we need to do is set it up and it will get A LOT of use from Miles.   Brooks came over to the shower to help with something and got to see all the goodies that we were blessed with!  He had the same reaction he did when he walked into the room from Gavin's baby shower.  It was cute and a priceless memory.

Just to show you how much we are loved- here are some of the beautiful women that have become a part of our lives over the last few months.  They have also been the ones taking care of us this past week while I've been on bed rest.  Oh yea, haven't mentioned that have I?!?!  The day of my baby shower, I actually started having contractions around 10:15am and they didn't stop until 10:15PM (this was my 3rd episode of contractions in a week).  It was a very long day, one in which I stayed in bed ALL day, except to go to the shower.  There was a car waiting on our compound for us to call and say "let's go to the hospital".  We had packed a bag and were prepared to meet Miles.  We spent a lot of time praying that my contractions would stop and that we wouldn't be meeting Miles that early.  Praise the Lord, they stopped and we didn't go to the hospital- my contractions never became consistent the entire day- they were all over the place.
After this episode, and being given this information at my previous doctors appointment, Brooks and I decided I needed to go on bed rest for the next 2 weeks, just until I could make it to 36 weeks!  We weren't really sure how bed rest would work, being all the way over here, but God is soooo good! We have meals being cooked and delivered for us every night and in the mornings, different ladies take turns coming and getting Gavin so I can lay down.  Gavin has enjoyed the attention and is loving getting to go to the playground, riding his bike around the compound, and he even got to visit the preschool classroom at the International school and play with the kids.  He watched them put a play on at the school, behaved himself very well, and went to Burger King and got a kids meal.
It has been a true blessing knowing that he is getting taken care of and is in good hands!  I made it another week and am now 35 weeks.  Our goal is to make it to this Thursday, when I'll be 36 weeks.  At that point, we will feel comfortable welcoming Miles into the world.  However, we're hoping he won't come until closer to his due date, or better yet, once my parent's get here, but we have no control of it and will welcome him when he comes!

Thank you ladies for a wonderful, memorable shower.  We truly were blessed by all of you and are so grateful and thankful that you are apart of our lives!  Miles Lee Perry is going to feel so loved!

MANicure

I wanted to brag on my hubby since this is Thanksgiving week and I'm so thankful for having him in my life-- for many reasons, not just this one!!!

We moved to Saudi in August.

In September, I clipped and painted my own toe nails.

I haven't touched them since thanks to my growing belly, which has made it more difficult to bend down and stay down for long periods of time.  They were pretty bad.  I'm not ashamed to admit it-- I've never really been one to care about my nails.  However, my sweet husband finally realized how bad my toe nails were and he offered to give me a MANicure-- or pedicure I should say.  He clipped my toe nails AND painted them. I'm thinking he did a pretty good job!  Thanks babe for helping to make me feel pretty!!

Labor Signs and Setting up the Nursery

Guess what?!?!

My body has been showing signs of "preterm" labor.

It's so hard for me to even call it preterm labor when I'm this far along, but I understand that Miles is NOT full term yet and we'd like to keep it that way.  Brooks and I have had a few eventful, late nights with me having contractions (think every 20 minutes, for 5 hours, and with a pain that I'd rate a 2).  We've been concerned that I could go into labor and we're doing our best to pay attention to my body so we're getting things ready and taking precautions.

We went to my doctors appointment yesterday (Monday) and it went well.  I'm not dilating any, which was a HUGE relief.  However, doctors here don't stop labor once a woman is passed 34 weeks.  I will be 34 weeks on Thursday.  My doctor didn't see the need to give me the injection that can stop contractions, prescribe medication (which I took while on bed rest with Gavin), nor did he feel it was necessary to get the steroid shot to support Mile's lung development.  Now, don't get me wrong, you might be reading that and thinking.... seriously?!?  That's horrible.  However, Brooks and I are comforted with the fact that my body has made it this far along.  I'm officially "taking it easy", not lifting Gavin or other things, laying down at least several hours during the day (when I can), and I'm going on "pelvic rest", which I've semi- already been doing.  When I was pregnant with Gavin, our goal was to make it to 36 weeks-- we were comforted by that, hopeful that was far along for him, and so we're praying and believing my body will make it 2 more weeks.  We'd love to make it even longer, but that is our goal right now!!  Please be praying that my body can handle Miles for 2 more weeks and that we don't have any more "eventful" nights.

I told you in my last post that we started getting things ready for Miles to be welcomed into the world.  Here are some pictures of us doing just that.  It's fun to see the crib set up again, even though it hasn't been that long since we had it up.  I asked Gavin if that was his bed and he told me no.  Hmmm--- could it be possible that he already forgot he use to sleep in a crib?  Gavin was so excited to help Brooks and I set up Miles crib and he keeps walking into the room saying, "Miles night night".  It's fun to watch him make the connection that baby Miles is coming!
