Packing, Jetlag, & A New Bed

Packing to travel back to the Kingdom, after spending 6 weeks in the USA brings on a difficult challenge at times.  It takes planning, well thought out organizing, and can be a task in itself to keep 3 sets of hands out of the bags.  We've packed so many times that I kinda have a system down and make the most of it.  I generally start packing 2-3 days before we leave.  I HATE the feeling of being rushed while packing the day we fly out so I try to avoid that as much as possible.  I usually pick up all the necessities that we want to bring back with us throughout our visit in the states so I don't have as big of a shopping trip and can organize things sooner.  I bag all our stuff in Ziploc bags since I tend to take everything out of its boxes or containers to save space.  This also helps to help keep things together.  I organize suitcases based on weight- so heavy items will be paired with lighter items to maximize space and to distribute weight evenly.  I always ship 1-2 boxes of clothes, crafts, toys, etc that are on our company's approved ship list.  Anything that can't be shipped or would require a high duty tax on it is ALWAYS the first things to go inside our suitcases.  For the most part, we manage to keep all 8 of our suitcases right at 50lbs, but that requires some heavy duty lifting to figure out.  We've been over weight on a few bags, a few times at the airport, even after spending the time to weigh our bags, and we either attempt to move things around from one bag to another OR just deal with it and pay the $50 fine.  My thinking is if I take the stuff out and ship it I may end up paying $50 in duty fees and shipping so might as well get it to Saudi with me and faster.

Our trip back to the Kingdom in August was myself, the kids, and a dear friend, Heather, who doesn't have kids, but is pregnant and due in November.  (Brooks was only in the US for 3 weeks before heading back without us.) Heather was gracious enough to travel back with me and help with the kids and I'm so thankful she was there!  We met her at the airport, got checked in, after being told I had 3 extra bags and 5 bags overweight.... UMMMM NO, NO, and NO!  A lot of arguing and pulling out policies and talking to administrators, and fighting to get our seats together.... let me just stop here for a minute.... What airline requires you to have a 2nd adult if you travel with 2 infants (Miles and Brooklyn are both under the age of 2) and then won't seat your 2nd adult anywhere near you and the 2 infants.  DUMB if you ask me!  None the less, everything got worked out.. Heather sat directly behind us, I didn't have any overweight bags and "the extra bags" were being counted as my stroller, Miles car seat, and his rolling cart that was attached to his car seat, along with too many carry ons... however, their policy is 1 individual carry-on per traveler, NOT 1 large carry-on for mommy to have every one's stuff in her bag, therefore I had 5 carry on bags and they felt that was too much.  Um, hello-- I have 3 kids=3 carry-ons, my rolling carry-on & a diaper bag/purse!  It's all the exact amount that goes with your policy.  Geez people!  So after an hour of checking in and getting through security... we were at the gate.

I went and got the kids some dinner, changed everyone into their pajama's, boarded the plane, administered the Benadryl and within an hour and a half of taking off.... everyone was asleep!!!  Heather and I even slept.  My "rule" when traveling with the kids is always I SLEEP WHEN THEY SLEEP.  I made that mistake one too many times watching a movie or reading while they slept and then never had a chance to sleep the duration of our flight because someone was always awake!  Both Heather and I took advantage of the down time and got lots of rest!  The kids did awesome.  We didn't have any issues.  No one was sick- no one was fussy- no one cried!  Miles woke up after sleeping only 3 hours and I did play with him for about an hour after midnight and then got him to go back to sleep.  8 hours later the kids were awake, ate some breakfast, played, watched movies, took 1 more nap, and then woke up before landing!! It was awesome.  Flying back to the Kingdom is always 1000x easier then flying from the Saudi to the US.  Since we leave at night, the kids are tired and want to sleep!  Woo hoo!!

Once we arrived in Saudi we walked into the customs room and there were 2 lines opened.  UGH. The line was out the door.  Heather waited in the long line, while I walked towards the one line that was for Saudi's only.  I stood there and waited until the 5 Saudi's went through then began walking towards the guard.  He motioned for me to come forward!  SCORE!! I had Gavin run grab Heather and she came up with us.  We handed our passports and visas, got stamped and off we went!  Less then 10 minutes!  We found all our bags, made it through the "security screening" and once again, Heather and I were being watched instead of the monitor where our bags were passing through.  We walked out to the main area and started looking for Brooks.  He was waiting out in the open area and once Gavin saw him he dropped his backpack and took off running yelling Daddy.  He jumped into Brooks' arms and it was one of the sweetest moments I've seen in a long time.  I teared up.  Part of this move causes us to make sacrifices and be apart for long time periods.  That's tough for little kids so you can image the relief Gavin felt to see his daddy.  Miles and Brooklyn were just as ecstatic and expressed it in their own way.  I was grateful to be back with my husband, too.

Everyone fell asleep in the car by the time we made it back to our house.  Brooks and I quickly changed the kids into their pajamas and put them to bed.  Here comes the fun part!  Since Brooklyn was rolling over, she needed our crib, which meant Miles was being moved into a big boy bed.  For some reason, still un beknown to me, Brooks and I decided to introduce Miles to his new bed the night he arrived back to our Saudi house.  That kid didn't know what to do, what to think, and was extremely perplexed with his new freedom.  The next 20-30 minutes were very entertaining for us.  Miles kept walking into our room and smiling.  We continuously put him back into his bed over and over again until he was finally too tired to keep trying.  He loved his bed and loved that it looked like Gavin's.

The next morning we all slept late so daddy went into work, but came home around lunchtime to spend some time with all of us!  It was a fun reunion and everyone was excited to be back together!!

Jet lag was tough, then again, it always is.  This is something else we've done so many times that we have a routine and a way that we go about it to help get the kids over it, but ultimately, jet lag is just something we have to deal with.  It happens and there isn't a way to avoid it with little kids.  This is how the boys felt being woken up from their nap during the day.

His 1st, 4th Birthday Party

Gavin got to celebrate his 4th birthday, before he turned 4, in order to have the opportunity to celebrate with family and friends while we were in the USA.  I'm so grateful that every year we've been able to celebrate Gavin's birthday with our family and their willingness to help throw him a party!

Of course, we went with a super hero themed party and since Gavin wanted to go swimming, we celebrated at the Country Club Pool.  I ordered him a cookie cake since you can't get cookie cake in the Kingdom, picked up some of his favorite snacks, and off we went to the pool.

Gavin had fun swimming with his cousins and with Banks, my bestie Megan's little boy.  He loved having everyone sing him Happy Birthday and getting to open presents.  He was pretty excited to get some dress up clothes, games for his Leap Pad, cash, and a Cars Mater Space Ship.  It was a fun afternoon.

2 year Saudiversary

2 years

24 months

730 days

1,051,200 minutes

That's how long we've lived in Saudi.

August 8, 2012 was our 2 year Saudiversary.  Can you believe we've already lived here 2 years?  It's crazy how time flies.

I never wrote/blogged about our first year Saudiversary last year.  For some reason, I never had the words to put into writing my feelings about living here at that point.  Things were fine, I think I was just in a strange place and wasn't ready to get into it.  I wish I could go back and write about it, but instead, I'll just share my feelings on being here for 2 years.

I remember like it was yesterday, when Brooks walked into our kitchen and said, "Hey babe, there's a chance we could move to Saudi, would you want to go?"  And all I could do was laugh at him and thought nothing of it.

I also remember sitting at Cracker Barrell in Baytown, TX, 5 months pregnant, on a Monday evening after attending an informational meeting at CP Chem regarding the project in Saudi.  I cried the entire meal.  I was so over whelmed with emotions and feelings that we were actually going to do this.  It was there that I told Brooks I married him and loved him more then anything and would move anywhere in this world if it meant to be with him and support him in what he does!!

Two years after that conversation we packed our house up and boarded a plane and began our adventure as a family of 3 and added two bundles of joy since then.  A lot has changed since we moved to this side of the world (not just having more kids) and I can honestly say that I'm grateful we did this.

Our lives have been blessed in many, many ways and we've grown in various aspects.  Brooks and I have been stretched, but ultimately, our marriage has been strengthened!  We've grown closer to the Lord and have appreciated God's blessings for our obedience in staying united together during this move, transition time, and journey.

We've had to adapt and adjust to new schedules, long work hours, life in a foreign, Islamic, Middle Eastern country, which brings it's own issues.  With all the changes and "new normals" that have been brought into our lives, we've made it all work and established our family life here and all is well!

We're doing really good.  We have great friends who we love and appreciate dearly.  We are apart of a community who encourages one another and provides constant support and who ultimately has become like family.  We've been given the chance to have a life here pursing personal interests just like if we were at home.  We actually feel that we've gotten to do more things living here IN SOME ASPECTS then if we were at home.  However, we also realize what we are missing out on things not living in the comfort of the USA.  Yet, when you make this move, you really have to change your mentality and perspective on things and truly hold on to what you have gained, versus what you are missing out on.

I feel like I've learned some major life lessons since making this move and living here for two years such as:

- NEVER SAY NEVER (although, I did just tell Brooks I'll never move to China)
- don't let the fear of the unknown stop you from doing something
- you'll never know unless you try
- there's no use in fighting or fretting over something you have no control of
- appreciate and be grateful for the people in your life
- don't let your circumstances dictate your life (easier said then done, but you can make the most of tough situations)

I'm grateful for learning these life lessons and hope that I will hold on to them for the rest of my life regardless of where I live.

I mentioned above how part of this move did bring on an aspect of "missing out on things" and that has been an adjustment and has brought on some heartache for us, our family, and even close friends.  Life has changed for us.  Life has changed for everyone else.  Sacrifices have been made.  Adjustments were made.  That has been a difficult process of our move and there's no easy way to get around it.  I just keep telling myself that this is such a short season in our life and hopefully once we move back home and transition, those areas will all work them selves back out and no one will have to hold onto what they have missed out on, including us!

So, there you go.  Two years in Saudi.  WOW!!  Who knows what the future holds and how much longer we'll be here, but I do know that we'll enjoy our time here in the Kingdom, we'll make the most of our visits home, we'll take advantage of living here and travel this side of the world, we'll prepare for moving on to another project some day, and we'll go through another cycle of adjustments, transitions, and new journeys!

Blessings to you all no matter where you are or what your circumstances are!

Brooklyn 6 Months

Our baby girl turned 6 months on July 28, while we were in the USA.  WOW-- can not believe how fast 6 months has gone by.  She is as cute as can be.  Her personality is starting to show a little.  She is an extremely content baby and is always, always happy.  She has kept herself on the same schedule she's had since about 3 months old.  She eats 5-6 oz every 3 hours, plays for an hour and half, then takes an hour and a half nap.  She LOVES her brothers and attempts to chase them while standing in the walker at my parents house.  She is now a pro at rolling over and uses that to get around places.  She has started pushing up on all fours and has even began rocking back and forth.  She even figured out how to put her pacifier back in her mouth all by herself.

She's trying new foods and is working on swallowing them.  It's taken her a while to not keep the food just sitting in her mouth.  She wasn't too sure of these pears.  She's even showing us she'd prefer to feed herself at times... what a big mess that is.  She's a pro at holding her bottle and doesn't want you to even think about feeding her.  She will do it!

Brooklyn loves lounging in her baby raft and finally will stay in it without someone needing to hold her up in it.  She would love more then anything to walk in the walker, but for now lets her brothers push her around.

She loves spending time in the kitchen and especially likes to help with the baking!!  She even loves the LSU Tigers already!!  A girl after her mama's heart!!

Texas Childrens

Many of you know that Brooklyn was diagnosed with Hydronephrosis several months ago and it is something we have been monitoring monthly.  While we were in the USA we met with a Pediatric Urologist at Texas Childrens Hospital who specializes in kidney development and function.  Our Saudi doctors have had us on edge regarding B's condition and we were at a place where we felt like we needed more answers and a plan to help prevent any damage being done to Brooklyns kidneys.  A month before we left for the states, we sent all of Brooklyn's ultrasounds, scans, paperwork, lab results, tests, etc to TCH in Houston and had them look everything over.  Based on what they reviewed, no further tests were ordered for when we were in the USA.  We had B's kidney scanned three days before we left for the USA to provide an up to date glance of her kidney for the US urologist as well.
My mom came with me to Brooklyns appointment to be another set of ears and help clarify questions that I had and to make sure I asked all my prepared questions.  The urologist was friendly and helpful.  At first we were greeted by an assistant who walked in our room, sat down, told us everything from our Saudi reports, and just said okay, Brooklyn does have hydronephrosis, but she's fine. And that was essentially it.   UMMMM...  not okay.  About 10 minutes later the urologist came in and did a lot more explaining, listened to our concerns, answered all our questions, and then gave us our future plan.

Basically, Brooklyn does have a blockage in her kidneys and the tubes are dilating due to the blockage.  However, and this was the most important aspect we learned from the appointment, Saudi measures a certain area of Brooklyns kidneys that determined the severity of her condition where the US doctors measure a different area.  Based on the TCH urologist location of measurement, Brooklyn's condition is not considered severe.  The other part that is a huge positive component to what Brooklyn has is it has not affected her kidney function, which is something we've been watching and waiting for.  If her kidney function is affected that's when we know her condition is worsening.  We're grateful to know that her condition is not near as severe as what we thought and our current plan is to continue monitoring it every 3 months.  The urologist at TCH assured us that if Brooklyns condition worsens, it will take a while for any damage (that could occur) to affect her kidney function and we will be able to do something about it before that happens.  So, until then, we just wait and pray and hope that her condition will fix itself or no more dilation will occur!

LC Summer: Captain and Kimmie's House

While in LC we spend a lot of time with my parents, brothers and SIL, and nieces and nephews.  There is usually always someone to be with and when we're all together it makes for some special, fun, loud times.  As always, the kids play their little hears out with one another and know just how to make each other laugh!  Us adults seem to have our hands full chasing after each group of kids that mingle together.  One of our favorite things to do this summer at Captain and Kimmie's house was to play outside.  A majority of our evenings were filled with dinner on the back porch thanks to my dads delicious cooking and playing in the yard or drive way.  My mom always wants to make sure the kids are having a blast and making memories together so when she suggested to make a slip n slide we are eager to see it happen.  We went and found some plastic liner in the garage and they have THE.PERFECT.SLOPE in their yard... the kids HAD A BLAST!!!  We also spent hours playing with the sprinklers, splashing in the baby pool, bubbles, riding scooters and bikes and golf carts, etc.  It was a great time with my parents and family.

Muscle Men!!

Don't ever underestimate the understanding of rain.  It poured outside one day and Miles was extremely intrigued.  He got Brooks to take him outside and check it out.  Miles was mesmerized.

We even made multiple visits to the doctors office: vaccinations, stomach bug, ear infections, massively large, insane size bug bites, and pink eye.  Yep, all that stuff hit us in just a 6 week time period.  UGH.
While my dad was away on a trip, Kimmie went and picked up donuts for breakfast and brownies for dessert!  YUMMY!!
